What inspired this?

I first began this type of drawing when I entered my GCSE’s. With the curriculum being already chosen I found it difficult to express what I wanted through the chosen subjects. However, when we reached our final exam we were given the liberty to do anything we pleased for the 10 hours. It was then when I did research into Ileana Hunter for example and saw these types of drawings. I was immediately inspired by this and decided to do a photo of my sibling for my final exam from a photo she had taken. Exams were ingrained to be something causing anxiety yet this was the only exam were I was completely immersed in the experience and actually wished for more time. I was unable to use a light box during this exam and therefore had to freehand. I gained a grade A in this assessment and was introduced to my love of free handing art in detail. Although now it is less time consuming to use a light box I still use my free hand as it’s a good skill to have when unable to use such things and still having the ability to produce something.

I focused specifically on aspects such as light and dark and aimed to understand these elements to the best of my ability through research as I continued, i additionally looked into the practical uses within art such as negative space and how to use these to gain a specific want to a piece of art. I spent months on gathering a catalogue of all these and putting them into practice becoming aware of the complexities within art. The use of lighting was something I quickly learnt was imperative as it had the ability to change a piece in several ways. The uses of black and white and lighting is what I mainly adapt to now within my art and what I produce using shading to create my pieces.
